A. SELF-EVALUATION PROCESS

Accreditation activities at the Ophthalmology Clinic were initiated on March 9, 2026, with the formation of the Self-Evaluation Committee. A roadmap was established, and all medical staff (training officers, specialists, and residents) were informed through a general assembly. Data was compiled from hospital quality units, surgical/polyclinic records, biomedical databases, and the academic archives of the program director. The final draft was approved by the hospital administration after rigorous data verification.

B. MEETING SPECIALIZATION TRAINING STANDARDS

Vision & Mission

  • Vision: To lead scientific developments in ophthalmology; to contribute to national health by training highly qualified, ethical, and respectful specialists; and to provide reliable, modern service through high-tech infrastructure.

  • Mission: To offer contemporary medical opportunities to the public while adhering to ethical rules; to remain an internationally prestigious institution; and to maximize the quality of human and information resources provided to our country.

Core Training & Quality Policies

We are committed to:

  • Standardized residency programs compliant with TUKMOS and Turkish Ophthalmological Association (TOA) curricula.

  • Adopting a patient-oriented service model aligned with international competencies (ICO and ACGME).

  • Supporting continuous academic development and "Wet-lab" simulation training (established August 2025).

C. TRAINING PROGRAM STRUCTURE & ROTATIONS

1. Orientation and Early Training: Newly recruited residents undergo a comprehensive orientation by the Quality Unit and the Program Director. For the first two months, they serve in polyclinics and emergency rooms under the supervision of senior residents and specialists. A scheduled practical training program on examination techniques and diagnostic devices is provided in the first month.

2. Rotation Framework: Residents rotate through sub-units every two months. The rotation schedule includes:

  • Anterior Segment: ~10 months (Ward/Surgery)

  • Retina: 8–10 months

  • Strabismus & Oculoplastics: 4 months each

  • Glaucoma: 3–4 months

  • Refractive Surgery: 3–4 months

  • Uvea-Neuro-ophthalmology & Contact Lenses: 1–2 months each

  • External Rotations: 1 month at Süleymaniye Maternity Hospital for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

3. Academic and Practical Activities:

  • Theoretical Education: Weekly seminars and case presentations every Wednesday (14:00–16:30).

  • Simulation Training: Access to cataract surgery simulations at TODEM and the hospital's internal Wet-lab facility.

  • On-call Duties: Residents start active night shifts after 3 months of supervised "referee" shifts.

D. EVALUATION AND ACADEMIC PRODUCTIVITY

  • Resident Logbooks (Carnets): Progress is tracked via digital logbooks (UEYS/TOYK), documenting surgical competencies and academic presentations.

  • Examinations: Formative exams are conducted at the end of each rotation. An annual multi-choice summative exam (every June) was implemented per the February 2026 board decision.

  • Theses: Thesis advisors are assigned by the end of the second year. Theses are written according to UHS guidelines and defended before a three-member jury.

  • Scientific Output:

    • Beyoğlu Eye Journal: Our PubMed-indexed scientific journal (indexed in Web of Science - ESCI since 2025).

    • Congress Participation: Residents are actively encouraged to present at international meetings such as ESCRS, SOE, and AAO.

    • Beyoğlu Eye Days: The 7th annual symposium was successfully held in February 2025, serving as a national reference meeting.

E. INFRASTRUCTURE & FACILITIES

With the opening of the Gümüşsuyu Annex in 2023, our hospital reached a total capacity of 155 beds. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical tools, providing 3rd-tier healthcare services. Comprehensive digital library access (ClinicalKey and UHS Database) is provided to all staff.

Conclusion: Beyoğlu Eye Training and Research Hospital remains a leading reference center, blending a deep-rooted academic tradition with modern technology to raise the next generation of ophthalmologists.
